North to the Rhine and the Danube is the Route of the Germanic Border: a touristic itinerary which runs along Roman Empire's boundary with their enemy Germanic tribes.

The route starts in Rheinbrohl, next to Koblenz, at Rhine's northern shore. Then, it descends towards Wiesbaden-Mainz, and prolongs bordering Frankfurt -already at the Main's shore-, and south again as far as nearly reaching Stuttgart. Finally, the route turns east to end up in Regensburg, a city bathed by the Danube.

Overall, this route configured some 500 kms of border against dangerous Germanic tribes, a truly nightmare for Roman legions 2.000 years ago. All along numerous museums and archaeology sites are to be found as well as natural scale replicas of ancient fortifications, watch towers, walls, cemeteries and the whole defensive system legionaries and auxiliary troops built up so as to avoid the invasion of barbarian tribes which eventually took place. These replicas are the ideal scenario for numerous performances and shows acting out ancient legions and auxiliary troops watching over the Empire's border 2.000 years ago.

Worth mentioning are real scale replicas of Pohlheim and Eichstätt watch towers and Saalburg's walls -north of Frankfurt-, and Weissenburg -south of Nürnberg-.

In Saalburg the most complete Roman military camp in Europe has been reconstructed with not only its stone walls, but also wood shacks to fit 80 legionaries and accommodation for the centurion.
