Archäologische Park Carnuntum

Web page:http://www.carnuntum.co.at

In VI AC General and future Emperor Tiberius set up a military camp by the Danube in the Carnuntum area for roman legions in campaign against the Marcomans to spend the winter. Carnuntum started off as an incipient military base but gradually won strategic importance and population. Not only it became the Roman naval base in the Danube but also as capital of the Superior Panonia Province it reached 50.000 inhabitants. When Roman troops left the Panonia Province in 430 AC and the Empire ended in 476 AC, the city fell into oblivion. In modern times, Carnuntum's ruins were largely excavated and they constitute a first level archeological park, with outstanding remains of the civil city, the military camp, two amphitheaters, baths, etc.

Park Carnuntum is placed in Petronell-Carnuntum, a town some 30 Km west of Vienna and offers lots of historical reenactment activities specially directed at schools and children. One-week stays filled with guided visits and theatre-like shows will enable children to learn the way ancient Romans lived.

Civil and military ruins constitute the ideal scenario for historical reenactment performances. A great deal of events and shows depicting legionaries' daily lives, gladiator's fights, civil and commercial life or religious ceremonies annually take place within the park mainly acted out by German reenactment groups.
