Historical Re-enactment Groups

Catalonia is a country which enjoys a great number of traditions and where hundreds of fairs, events, markets and festivals of every sort annually take place:

  • Events with religious background: Living cribs, passions, processions, etc.
  • Festive events: Castellers or "human towers", giants, devils dances, witches, etc.
  • Gastronomic Festivals: Mushrooms fair, etc
  • Traditional fairs: the "Patum", "Correbous", "Crèma deth Haro", etc
  • Professions and craftsmen Festival

More than a half of these celebrations have direct historical connotations, in particular medieval markets, Moors and Christians' parades, bandits' marches or modernist fairs. Others such as religious processions or markets of ancient professions, to name two, are also filled with historical elements. Therefore, historical backgrounds are somewhat present in more than one hundred of such events.

This web site is devoted to historical re-enactment and focuses on the people who actually perform and act out historical events. It deals with groups constituted ad hoc, willing to spread history or make experimental archaeology through workshops, recreations or amusing and didactic shows. Groups whose foremost aim is to teach and divulgate history to the general public in an enjoyable way keeping up accurate academic standards. This is why many existing groups with mainly religious, festive or folkloric backgrounds are not considered on this page.

Here are some of the groups which are not included on this portal:

  • Easter Armed Nazarene and other groups of historical-religious basis
  • Bandits, dances of devils, witches and other festive groups
  • Drummers, shawn players and others with popular folkloric roots
