In 1640, during the Harvesters War (Guerra dels Segadors), an irregular body of soldiers named Almogàvers Company -popularly known as "Miquelets"- was recruited by Catalan authorities with the aim to confront troops of Philippe IV of Castilla. During the Nine Years War (1688-1697) they made obvious their value causing great disturbance to the king of France soldiers.
In the Spanish Succession War (1705-1714) Archduke Charles III of Austria re- established the body, which got actively involved in fighting troops of the Crowns of Castilla and France. Their deep knowledge of the territory, mobility and great firing power, turned the Miquelets into a nightmare to the enemy.
Miquelets de Catalunya is a historical re-enactment group devoted to endorsing study and divulgation of history, culture and traditions in early 18th century Catalan territories. They wish to achieve so through active re-enactment shows, by characterizing associate members as the militiamen and soldiers who, from 1704 to 18th September 1714, defended the rights, freedom and institutions of Catalan people.
Set up in late 2005, more than 20 members of varied ages and professions are currently in the association, all sharing a common interest in history and their Country.
At present, they are engaged in replicating uniforms of the Regional Government Regiment (1705-1714), a contingent created by the Catalan Government (the Generalitat) to confront Franco-Castilian Borbonic armies. In particular, samples of rifleman, grenadier, drum, sergeant, official and led uniforms are being made. To do so, they are aided by historians and researchers of that period.
Their will is to create replica uniforms as faithful as possible to their original counterparts. Equipment and materials search is not always easy. Some elements have been brought from Canada, the US or the United Kingdom, all of them countries with a longer tradition in re-enactment.
Miquelets de Catalunya participates in historical shows simulating battles, in parades or in commemorative acts. Shortly, all members will be armed with rifles to increase performances' magnificence. Also, the group will engage in faithfully replaying a military camp of the period and reconstructing uniforms of other Catalan units.
