Legio VIIII Hispana is a project developed by Hispania Romana Cultural Society, a cultural entity dedicated to the maintenance and reconstruction of Ancient Rome culture. It is not a strictly Catalan group, but many of its members are Catalan.
Particularly, Legio VIIII Hispana is a military re-enactment unit whose aim is to reconstruct Roman legionaries' equipment, techniques and everyday experiences. To this end, members of Legio VIIII Hispana accurately manufacture, build and purchase the necessary equipment to be able to behave as real Roman legionaries.
This group pursues to re-enact the legionaries belonging to Legio VIIII Hispana, a legion existing from the beginning of 1st century BC until 2nd century AC, that was to be found throughout the Empire: in Hispania, Germania, Britannia and as far as Judea. This legion took part in the Cantabric Wars (August's final conquest of Hispania), thus adopting its name "Hispana", as well as in emperor Claudius' conquest of Britannia, Trajan's campaigns and the war with the Dacians (non-documented participation).
It seems this legion was destroyed- at least all records of it disappear- during Simon ben kosiba Jewish revolt (132-136 AC) or during a revolt by the Danube (162 AC)
