Girona 1809 - Miquelets de Girona is a cultural association founded in 2008 to divulgate the facts of the two Sieges of 1808 and 1809 the city of Girona suffered during the Continental War (in Catalan French War, and in Spanish Independence War) and the period of French government until 1814, under this great European conflict, in which Napoleon Bonaparte was the main protagonist.
The Association has two lines of action. The first one is to consolidate a group of historical re-enactement of Napoleonic era, the first one in Catalonia. Furthermore, Girona 1809 - Miquelets de Girona aims to bring the history of the French War, in general, and the Sieges and the French occupation, in particular, to the greatest number of visitors with educational and entertaining activities.
These activities are supported by several historians of the University of Girona, which in turn are members of the association.
Currently, they have thirty members representing the following bodies that denfended the city during the Sieges:
- Ultonia Regiment (Irish unit serving the Spanish army): 3 soldiers and 7 officers.
- First "Brigade" of Miquelets of Girona: 2 officers and 23 soldiers.
- Heroines (women) of Santa Barbara: 15 members.
- "Sant Narcis" Hussar Regiment (cavalry): 5 officers.
The main activity of this association is the participation in the Girona Napoleonic Festival (www.girona18081809.com).
