Alma Cubrae originated thanks to brothers Jordi and Àngel Rodríguez Portella, culture enthusiasts and winners of several national and international sculpture awards. Their skills modelling medieval pieces together with their knowledge of certain relevant historical episodes in Catalan history, took them to set up a group that offered medieval representations depicting Catalan traditions with a historical approach.
A dozen members are in this group devoted to organizing medieval shows (knights tournaments, fights against a dragon, mercenaries arrivals and leprosy). They have participated in markets, fairs and medieval festivals all over Catalonia (Castelló d'Empúries, Calonge, Calella, etc) performing setting and street shows.
It must be said all their clothing, weapons and fantastic characters are handmade. Different sculptural techniques (modelling, moulds, forge, etc) have been used in order to faithfully replicate all pieces, which has involved undertaking tremendously extensive research (literary documents, graphic collections, pieces of museums or historical passages).
They also use professional make up techniques to illustrate scars, wounds and special effects on their characters so that they look truly authentic.
The group plans opening up to new historical epochs, especially the Roman period. At present, they are producing videos and short movies about medieval cavalry that can be seen in Youtube.
