For a few decades, three ancient nations -each upholding their own culture- inhabited Empúries town in peace and harmony. These were: the native Iberian population, Greek traders who arrived in 575 BC from Marseille, and a Roman contingent that disembarked in 218 BC in order to fight Hannibal Carthaginian rearguard during the Second Punic War.
The MediterraneanTriumvirate Festival, with already 12 editions (2007), wishes to commit to memory that multicultural scenery by organising festive and entertaining activities that take visitors back to life in that period. The festival takes place a long weekend in June -from Friday to Sunday-, and it is organized by Escala's Town Council, a society of local merchants, local tourist managers and the Catalan Museum of Archaeology.
This festival was born with clear economic and leisure purposes and disregarding historical re-enactment. However, as years went by, the quality standard and historical rigour in performances has increased. Although the Festival maintains its highly festive spirit it is has gained reputation in the world of re-enactment.
Parallel to Triumvirat Mediterrani a Gastronomic Festival takes place in l'Escala. Some 20 local restaurants participate in the cooking Festival offering ancient Ibero-Roman dishes in their menus.
