Every spring, under the castle-palace of Bellcaire d'Empordà walls, the last days of the County of Empúries are performed in an 11-acts play.

The County of Empúries extended from Banyuls de la Marenda and Requesens, to the north, as far as Verges and Bellcaire d'Empordà, to the south. For years this County vainly attempted to be independent from the Crown of Aragon.

In 1294, confrontations between King Jaume II and Count Ponç V, compelled the king to order the construction of a castle on top of Montgrí mountain, territory loyal to the Crown. Thus, from royal Torroella de Montgrí, Bellcaire and all the county of Empúries could be watched.

Later, in 1322, Count Ponç VI Malgaulí died leaving no descendants. The inheritance fell on Hug VI son of the lateral branch of the House of Cardona. The son of Hug VI, Joan I, rebelled against king Pere III in 1381. Eventually he surrendered and the County ended up in hands of the Crown in 1402.

Nowadays, while Bellcaire's inhabitants re-enact last days of the County of Empúries, from the peak of Montgrí, Jaume II's castle still seems to watch over ancient commands within the County of Empúries.

The show has great historical rigour and very accurate setting, with the exception of the questionable river Ter deviation. The 11 acts are the following:

  • Pirates of the Medes
  • Courts of Barcelona
  • The Crusade and conquest of Mallorca
  • Ponç Guillem of Torroella's threat
  • Ambush on the path to Verges
  • King Jaume
  • Women at the castle-palace of Bellcaire
  • The French
  • River Ter deviation
  • The Count's murder
  • Malgaulí, the last Count
