The first weekend in September Besalú evokes town life in 1000 AC -when Besalú was capital of one of the most important Catalan counties. Besalú market is documented back in 1027 and became the first trading centre in La Garrotxa region.

In only two days, the festival draws together more than 100 shows which allow visitors to better learn about one the most splendorous periods in Catalonia. Apart from artisans and children workshops, there are knight tournaments, shooting with catapults demonstrations, falconry exhibitions, duels, battles and even a medieval camp where visitors can experience life in the Middle Ages.

Each year the Medieval Market recalls a celebrity or historical fact. The 2007 edition was dedicated to enigmatic Count Tallaferro, a brave count owing his by-name to an iron cutting sword he was given by Saint Martin himself during a battle against Muslims.
